Meet The Team
Some of our members share their experiences and why they joined Team New2tri.
I started my triathlon journey as an overweight beer monster, and worked my way up from a non-swimmer to completing my first Ironman in 2019 at Vitoria Gasteiz, I love the team support and information that is available from our friendly members throughout our international community.
Best bit of kit to get you started is a smart watch and a heart rate monitor Garmin Vivoactive 3/Fenix 5 have been great for me.
I was off fighting season and fancied a new challenge to kill the time. Signed up to IM Staffs 70.3 and really got hooked up. I Joined Team NEW2TRI which encouraged me so much that I've registered to several more triathlon races. Oh, btw, I Never went back to fighting.
If you're a beginner don't go mad and spend all your money. Second hand bike, cheap helmet and accessories will do the job. If you want to treat yourself and spend money invest in good running trainers and a good quality watch, however a Trisuit and wetsuit with goggles are must have but again doesn't have to be top shelf, a team gear is always the best option of course.
I took up triathlon after seeing a friend complete a local sprint event and receive a finishers shirt with the competitor names on the back and I wanted one. I could swim, had a mountain bike and figured I could run, so I trained for the same event several years later, only to find the shirt had changed and there were no names. Undeterred I joined New2Tri and answered the call for a swimmer in a relay team for Staffs 70.3 in 2018. By the end I was hooked and returned the following year to complete the event individually - and find I had qualified for the 2019 70.3 World Championships in Nice. I've since gone on to qualify to represent Team GB for my age group at aquathlon (swim/run) and will eventually get round to a full Ironman.
My sports career started at 7yrs old when I was selected to represent Malawi for the Junior Swim team. Upon returning to SA, I represented Gauteng in the provincial team. From that point I was involved in competitive racing in individual swim and cross-country running events. Throughout my life I cycled and ran for clubs in individual events until 2017. I started competing in Triathlon in January 2018. I won my first race - Discovery ITU Sprint Triathlon 2018 and was selected to represent SA at Worlds. In April 2018 I was selected for Olympic Triathlon event. LD duathlon 2019, 2020 and 2021was my next SA selection for World's in Switzerland, as well as Triathlon 2019, 2020 & 2021. This year I have also been selected as part of the SA Aquabike team for World's. To date I have completed over 50 Triathlon events.
I have just joined the Team New2Tri as I need that extra motivation/inspiration for the swimming leg. I have been running for 10 years with a Marathon PB of 3:13:45 and ventured into Ultra Marathons 18 months ago. I regained my love for cycling during the first lockdown in 2020 and ended up completing over 2000 miles in each discipline last year. Now I just need that extra spark from being part of a team to push me into the pool and train for the 1st leg.
Having always been a relatively active and keen runner. I have ticked off most of the standard running achievements, 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and a Full Marathon, which has naturally left me looking for that next big challenge. There came the idea to do a Tri!
I found out about New2Tri and had the pleasure of meeting some of the team at a local event, and their enthusiasm and friendliness made me realise that if I were ever going to get to do a big triathlon, I would need to learn from some of the best and most experienced and try and soak up as much knowledge and information as I could.
New2Tri, are certainly helping me along with my journey and whilst I’m still lacking in two of the main elements, their inclusivity, inspiration and enthusiasm is infectious. It really doesn’t matter whether you have no experience, like me, TeamNew2Tri are such a fantastic team to be part of and I can’t wait to enter my first Tri as a New2Tri Team member.
